An article about modern war propaganda in Syria and Gaza.
In times of war, when there is no victory in site and you are mired in a bloody war of attrition, there is nothing: no weapon, no building no piece of intelligence, more valuable to you than dead children.
This is the realization which struck me today – and it really did feel like being struck – as I was reviewing videos posted online by rebels from the Free Syrian Army, as part of my work as the Editor of World News Curator. Videos and pictures of dead children are the holy grail of war propaganda. I was struck by this realisation as I watched yet another video posted online by rebels, showing the corpses of children reportedly killed by government air-strikes (complete with plenty of zooming in on their lifeless bodies by the cameramen), and as I read the accompanying words condemning Assad for his horrific crimes against humanity and passionately calling for his demise and the swift victory of the revolution. The intention of posting this video was clear, it was a message to the world saying – look at what this evil regime is doing, this is why we are fighting, we are just in our struggle against this evil and worthy of your support. What struck me, more than anything else, was the sickening hypocrisy. How is it, I thought to myself, that the most horrific consequences of war can be used as a justification for war?
