1 million Americans have signed petitions saying that they want their state to secede from the United States, and there are now petitions for every state. The highest levels of support come from (unsurprisingly) Texas.
President Obama's re-election is obviously a major factor in garnering support for these petitions from some quarters (see this article on race, politics and secession). But is it possible that any state could leave the union? I would love to hear what people think, both about the whether support for this will keep growing and about the legal issues and whether the federal government would ever allow it under any circumstances.
The UN has rulings about allowing people self-government that have been invoked as reasons why Scotland has to be allowed a referendum on independence, so it would be interesting to hear any opinions on whether that could have a bearing too. It would be so ironic if the kind of people who usually hate the UN and think its part of some sinister attempt at world government (like Alex Jone's listeners - Alex recently called for a 'second American revolution' and put all his weight behind this new secession movement) ended up getting support for this from the UN.
