In the final television debate between the two candidates standing for President of the United States of America in the November election Mitt Romney restated his opinion that Russia is a ‘geopolitical foe’ of America. In the past he has gone further; during the primary stage of the election process in March Romney described Russia as “our No. 1 geopolitical foe”.
It is certainly true that Russia and America are at odds over many of the big international issues of the day. Russia is constantly vetoing US resolutions at the UN, alongside China. They oppose US missile defense plans for Europe, stating that these are a direct threat to Russia. In the middle east, they created alliances with Iran and Assad's regime in Syria, and as the Syrian conflict increasingly threatens to become a broader regional war it seems that the United States and Russia would emerge as significant backers on opposite sides of the conflict. So did the cold war never truly finish when the Soviet Union collapsed - are Russia and the United States still enemies? I think so.
